2023-24 CSC Scholarship and Grants Award Winners Announced
by Brian Fremund – Vanderbilt University, Assistant Athletic Director - Communications
Chair of the CSC Scholarship Committee
Winners of 2023-24 College Sports Communicators scholarship and grants were announced on August 2.
Awards voted on by the CSC Scholarship Committee include two $6,000 postgraduate scholarships, a $2,000 undergraduate scholarship, a pair of renewable $1,000 scholarship winners among the children of CSC members, and two $15,000 graduate internship grants.
CSC Postgraduate Scholarships have been awarded since 1981, with the Langston Rogers and Wylie Smith Scholarships named in honor of outstanding professionals in the athletics communications industry. This year’s recipient of the Langston Rogers Scholarship is Nick Schmieg, a graduate assistant in the office at Slippery Rock, and Brandon Wirth from Ferris State will receive the Wylie Smith Scholarship.
Schmieg is a 2023 graduate of Geneva College, where he majored in both sport management and marketing and completed minors in economics and finance as well. In addition to serving as a student assistant at Geneva for two years, he completed internships with the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Wirth received his undergraduare degree in sports communication this spring after also competing in cross country and track at Ferris State. He was intern in the school’s communications office for two-and-a-half years, also working as a sports reporter for the Ferris State Torch and as an news and sports radio intern for Mentor Partners Inc.
Abbey Curtis of the College of Charleston is the 2023-24 CSC Undergraduate Scholarship award winner. For the last two seasons, Curtis has assisted with communications and creative content for CoC athletics. A communication major, with minors in marketing and Spanish, Curtis is expected to graduate in May 2024.
To be eligible for either the Postgraduate or Undergraduate Scholarships, candidates must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and express an interest in pursuing a career in sports information.
CSC Member-Child Scholarships, which assist with educational funding for children of CSC members, have been awarded since 2014. The recipients of $1,000 awards for 2023-24, which are renewable for up to four academic years given that individuals continue to meet the basic qualifications of the award, are Abigail Henry and Tessa Wallington.
Abigail Henry is the daughter of Brian Henry, currently the sports information director at West Florida. Abigail is majoring in biology and biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she is a member of the school’s cheerleading team and was recently elected to serve as the team’s public relations officer.
The daughter of UNLV associate athletics director/communications Mark Wallington, Tessa Wallington is working toward an undergraduate degree in hospitality with a focus in event management. Entering her sophomore year, she will serve as an intern for sports management company Position Sports beginning in the fall.
The Phil Langan Graduate Internships were introduced in 1999 as a way to assist understaffed offices and provide opportunity for those wishing to break into the field. It is a one-year grant of $15,000 to hire a graduate intern. Wartburg College and Ashland University have been selected as recipients of the award for 2023-24.
KatieJo Svenson is the sports information director at Wartburg, where she and a part-time assistant help manage the coverage of 26 sport programs for the NCAA Division III school. Dusty Sloan serves as director of athletics at Ashland, an NCAA Division II program offering 24 sports, with the staff including one other full-time assistant.
The CSC Scholarships and Grants program will award over $45,000 in scholarship and grant money to its members for the 2023-24 school year. For more information about the program and how you may benefit, please visit the Awards & Contests link on CollegeSportsCommunicators.com.
