From the Desk of President John Paquette – Committee and cabinet participation can be in small bites
by John Paquette – 2023-24 College Sports Communicators President @wjpaquette
BIG EAST Conference, Senior Associate Commissioner, Sports Media Relations
September is here and we’re all back at full tilt. We take a deep breath and we’re off and running again.
Some of the feedback that we’ve received from you, the membership, in the past year or so, is that asking some people to participate on committees or cabinets can often feel like a little too much in terms of time obligation. With 2023-24 in full gear, we are all aware about how crazy our lives can be. Still, we’d love for you to be involved. It can be in small bites. Reach out to a CSC staff member if you want more information.
We’ve had great interest in committee service coming out of CSC Unite in Orlando, but there are still some open spots. If a committee may not feel like the right fit, there are smaller opportunities to volunteer on behalf of committees, such as recording a short video on an important topic, suggesting and/or leading a professional panel, or even judging a contest.
Let’s give a big shoutout to the Young Professionals Committee for its work with 30 Under 30 (nominations are open through Oct. 15), the DEI Committee for its DEI corner in last year’s 360 on social media and the Goodness and Wellness Committee for its 5K and the community service work with Frontline Outreach. And a reminder that we continue to add relevant contests to the Creative and Digital Design Awards. More details on that soon.
Let’s sneak in one more note. If you have not purchased your ’23-24 membership, do so before October 1. Same prices as last year!
Bill Little – Longhorn Legend
We all mourned the recent passing of retired SID Bill Little of the University of Texas, who died August 23. Bill served Texas for 46 years. You may have read some of the tributes. He was a Longhorn legend by virtue of his outstanding service. And, to those of us outside Austin, he was much more than that.
At our convention in Orlando, in my first remarks serving as CSC President, I spoke of people in the business whom I know through the convention and maybe some other events. Bill Little was one of those people. In all of the years we have both been in the business, I don’t think we ever attended the same event in a working capacity. Yet, I considered Bill a friend and a colleague.
Bill always had a smile for you. He enjoyed his work and the people in our business. In addition to his service to Texas, he was one of the very early advocates for women in our profession. He served as CoSIDA President and was active as a past president. Bill gave so much to Texas and to us.
We are all grateful, Bill.
John
