Presented to College Sports Communicators members who have completed 25 years in the athletics communications profession. Vetted and voted on by the Special Awards Committee.

Rob Anderson — Creighton University Sports Information Director

This academic year marks the 23rd year that Rob Anderson has served as sports information director at Creighton. He joined the BIG EAST Conference school, located in Omaha, Neb.,  in December of 2001. He is the Bluejays' primary contact for men's basketball, volleyball, cross country and golf, and has had great success in promoting numerous athletes for national, regional and conference awards. This includes coordinating all publicity efforts for men's basketball standout Doug McDermott, the first basketball player in CU history to earn First Team All-America honors from the USBWA, AP and NABC and who swept all 14 National Player of the Year awards and also appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

He has extensive experience working numerous NCAA championships and conference events in a variety of roles. Each June, Anderson works with the NCAA during the Men's College World Series to provide live internet statistics, the official box scores of the series and game notes for participating teams.

Anderson arrived in Omaha after three and one-half years in the Northern Iowa athletic media relations office after Northern Iowa. His first professional position was as a sports information intern at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1998. As an undergraduate at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, he got his first exposure to athletic media relations as a three-year student assistant in the sports information office.

Anderson has earned numerous CSC Creative and Digital Design awards for his publications, game programs and game notes for men's basketball, women's volleyball and men's soccer. He also has been honored with East regional recognition for sports communications excellence from the AVCA with its annual Grant Burger Media Award (2016-17, 2019-20).  In 2013, he received one of Creighton University Division of Student Life's "Outstanding Staff Awards."

Mike Odom, Creighton University Athletics Executive Associate Athletic Director for External Operations – "Rob Anderson embodies the mission of Creighton University. His dedication to his profession, passion for student-athletes and coaches, and incredible work ethic are nothing short of remarkable. I think I speak for everyone in the athletic department that he is an invaluable teammate, and we are glad he is a Bluejay. Congratulations, and thank you, Rob!"

Anderson's reflections on his professional career to date…

I think my biggest reflection after 25 years in the profession is that there's a lot of really good people who have dedicated their lives (including nights & weekends) to college athletics. The more we can help each other, the better.

Professional development/career tips Anderson shares for younger and newer athletic communicators…

My best piece of advice would be to be well-rounded, willing and capable to help with any team or any situation. There will be times when you or your co-workers are going to be overwhelmed, and being able to step up in a pinch can be a lifesaver for everyone. Your first job probably isn't going to be working as the primary contact for a Top 10 ranked program in a revenue sport, but the skills you gain and relationships you make as you're getting started will pay off in the long run, and are remarkably similar to the abilities you'll need when you do rise to your dream job.
