Mark Fleming – Moravian University Director of Athletic Communications/Game Contracts

Whether promoting the student-athletes of Moravian University or honoring the accomplishments of CSC’s Academic All-America Hall of Famers, Mark Fleming has set a standard of excellence surpassed by few in the profession.

Fleming is in his 28th year at Moravian, overseeing the communications efforts for the Greyhounds’ 23 NCAA Division III programs. He also oversees the department’s coordination of game contracts, is a member of the university’s Game Scheduling Committee and is the site supervisor for Moravian’s swimming programs.

With his selection for the Warren Berg Award, Fleming is among a select and elite group that has received five of CSC’s special awards. A 2021 inductee into the CSC Hall of Fame, Fleming received a CSC 25-Year Award in 2023, the President’s Award in 2022 and the Lester Jordan Award (for excellence working with the Academic All-America® program) in 2013.

Prior to his tenure at Moravian, Fleming spent one year (1996-1997) in a dual role as the assistant sports information director at Bentley (Mass.) College and the Northeast-10 Conference. He began his career as a student, serving one year (1995-1996) as a graduate assistant at East Stroudsburg University and four years (1990-1994) as a student assistant at Edinboro University.

For most of his career, Fleming has dedicated his time and talent to CSC’s Academic All-America Core Program (1996-2015) and, since 2009, the Academic All-America Hall of Fame® Committee where he was vice chair for three years and served as chair from 2018 to 2022.

Additionally, Fleming served three years as a College Division Representative on the CSC Board of Directors and chaired the former College Division Management Advisory Council from 2014 to 2017.

Since 2009, Fleming has been the communications director for the Division III Sports Information Directors Association.

Sarah Twiggs, Landmark Conference assistant commissioner: "Mark exemplifies everything the Warren Berg Award represents. His dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to excellence have not only elevated Moravian athletics but has also left a lasting impact on the entire college athletic communications community. He has been a mentor and friend to me and is always willing to share his knowledge and lend his support. Mark’s passion for storytelling and advocacy for student-athletes make him a true leader in the profession, and this recognition is well served."

Chris Masters, University of Illinois Chicago senior associate AD/ CSC Academic All-America Hall of Fame Committee chair: "Mark’s dedication to excellence in sports communications is truly inspiring, and his recognition as this year’s Warren Berg Award recipient is a testament to his outstanding career. Throughout his tenure at Moravian, Mark has exemplified professionalism, integrity and a deep commitment to telling the stories of student-athletes.

I am particularly awed by his accomplishments as part of the CSC leadership governance structure. I was honored to serve alongside him, both on the CSC Executive Board and then with the Academic All-America Hall of Fame® Committee, seeing up close what a true leader and servant he is within our organization. Mark has become an incredibly valued colleague and friend, someone who has made a lasting impact on our profession. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor."

Mark Fleming on receiving the Warren Berg Award…
While I was honored to be selected to the CSC Hall of Fame a few years ago, the Warren Berg Award is very special to me. It is a much smaller group than the Hall of Fame and, having spent my entire career at college division schools, the list of prior winners includes a lot of people that I have had long-term friendships with. There are only a handful of the previous 40 winners that I don’t know personally, and I had the great opportunity to work with two Berg honorees in back-to-back years — Pete Nevins as a graduate assistant at East Stroudsburg in 1995-96 and Dick Lipe as an intern assistant at Bentley in 1996-97.

On his Involvement with CSC’s Academic All-America® program…
Working with the Academic All-America program epitomizes what we do as athletic communicators. We are promoting those student-athletes who not only excel in the athletic arena but also in the classroom. I see it every day at Moravian as a Division III school. We’ve had amazing and talented student-athletes during my career, and seeing many of them excel in the classroom and their careers after graduation is very satisfying.

When I began working with the Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2009, it became a chance to highlight those former student-athletes who have gone on to great things after graduation. We joke each year that it was an amazing induction class with outstanding stories, and how will we top it with the next class. Our selection committee does a tremendous job selecting our inductees.

On what makes working at Moravian so special…
Moravian has always been a close-knit community and we have many long-time staff members. I have been at Moravian for 28 years and I’m only the third-longest tenured member of the athletic department.

The school has a great family atmosphere. When my sons were young, the university worked with me to get the technology needed at the time to be able to work from home well before it was normal. When I brought the boys to campus, they were always welcomed and would spend time with other staff members or run around the athletic complex.

While it has taken longer than I might have liked at times, Moravian has also done its best to provide me with the assistance I need, whether that was adding an intern position that became full-time four years ago, or technology for multiple two-camera video stream setups to computers and camera equipment. I had an opportunity to head back to East Stroudsburg when Pete Nevins retired, but Moravian made me feel wanted and I decided to stay. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
