25-Year Award
Presented to College Sports Communicators members who have completed 25 years in the athletics communications profession. Vetted and voted on by the Special Awards Committee.

Matt McLagan — Macalester College Director of Sports Information

"I started my career in sports information later than most at 31, but it has been a perfect complement to my life and the person I have become. My career has taken me to some amazing places such as Paris, New York City and D.C., and it brought me and my family back home to Minnesota. I've had the best seat in the house to witness and document the incredible performances of many outstanding student-athletes. But truly the best part has been the connections, relationships and friendships made while working closely with coaches, administrators and students, and especially my colleagues in the athletics communications profession. It has been quite a ride, and I thank everyone I've met along the way for making these 25 years so special." — Matt McLagan, 2026 CSC 25-Year Award recipient

Matt McLagan is currently in his 11th year as director of sports information at Macalester College, a Division III institution in St. Paul, Minn. He spent 11 years as director of athletics communications at Division II Caldwell University after beginning his career in 2000 at Virginia Commonwealth University, a Division I school in Richmond, Va.

He received the AVCA Grant Burger Media Award for the NCAA Division II Women’s East Region in 2013 and was named the 2018 National Division III Sports Information Director of the Year by the Collegiate Water Polo Association.

Ryan Klinkner, Saint John's University (Minn.) Director of Athletic Communications, past CSC Rising Star Award recipient: “Matt’s 25 years in the field speak volumes about the kind of professional and person he is. His commitment to student-athletes, his integrity and the relationships he’s built across our conference have made a lasting impact. This recognition is well-deserved, and I’m grateful to call him a colleague and a friend.”

Chris McKibben, Bates College Assistant Athletic Director for Communications: “I’ve known Matt McLagan for 18 years now, since our early days at rival CACC schools in New Jersey. What began as a professional relationship — and a shared love of long-distance running — turned into a lasting friendship. Matt is the colleague everyone hopes to have; thoughtful, principled, and armed with a dry sense of humor that makes this business even more fun. He’s a terrific family man and someone I truly admire. This recognition is incredibly well deserved.”
