CSC Slack Platform for Community and Real-time Communications

Slack has two huge advantages for members — (1) it allows for real-time conversation and/or collaboration centered around a specific topic and (2) it keeps your inbox uncluttered.

How Slack Works
College Sports Communicators has a dedicated workspace called CSC Membership. Members can access the workspace by clicking the banner above. Contact beau@cscommunicators.com if the link does not work.

Within the workspace are channels. Channels are where the magic happens — real-time communication and collaboration around general or specific topics.

Current public channels available on CSC Membership

  • #announcements (members are automatically part of this channel)
  • #membership (members are automatically part of this channel)
  • #health-wellbeing (any member can join)
  • #kudos (any member can join)
  • #racial-social-justice (any member can join)
  • #division-3-membership (members at NCAA Division III institutions encouraged to join)
To access descriptions of all the channels or to join/leave a public channel:
  • Click on the + sign to the right of Channels
  • Select Browse Channels
  • Read the descriptions of each channel
  • Click Join or Leave on the far right side of the directory
Slack also has the ability for members to:
  • direct message colleagues
  • upload files for sharing
  • initiate video and audio calls from within the app

How to Get Connected with Slack
  1. Create an account on Slack.com. (Note: You can belong to multiple workspaces, but you’ll have a separate account for each.)
  2. Click the banner at the top of this page to join the workspace.
  3. Download the desktop app. Slack has a web version, a desktop app and a mobile app. Once downloaded, add as many workspaces to your dashboard as you like. (Pro tip: Having the desktop app open all day means you won’t miss a conversation.)
  4. Download the Slack mobile app and connect the workspace.

Who Sees What in Slack?
  • Public channels are just that — public. Any person who is part of the CSC Membership workspace can see all postings and files included in public channels.
  • Private channels are by invitation only. They do not appear on the dashboard or in your directory unless you are a member of the channel. Only invited members can see conversations, postings and files included in private channels.
  • Direct messages are between only those included in the message. Other members do not see direct messages unless they are part of the thread. Direct messages can be between two people or groups of people.

Interested in Creating A Topic-Specific Channel?
Interested in starting your own public channel around a specific topic (i.e., NCAA Live Stats, Presto Users, Graphic Design, Young Professionals, Weird Hobbies)? Simply click on Create Channel either by clicking on the + sign to the right of Channels in the dashboard or from the channel directory. Just remember, these channels are public. If you have a topic that might better be discussed in a private channel, contact staff.
