Open Forum: Career building & finding your confidence
Join us for an open forum with three esteemed panelists who will share their insights and experiences of working in various roles within the collegiate communications profession. With the changing landscape of our industry, the panelists will invite audience participation as this is a full interactive session. The presenters will answer your questions and offer career guidance to help get you on the right path to your next job – or enhance your standing at your current organization.
About the Panelists
Jerod Fox – Kansas City, Assistant AD for Strategic Communications
- Former collegiate tennis player at Hastings College in Nebraska.
- Began his path in athletic communications as a member of the Hastings College Media department serving as the social media director and Voice of the Broncos for basketball, volleyball, football and soccer broadcasts.
- Started as a graduate assistant at Kansas City in 2019 before being hired full-time as the Director of Communications in October 2021.
- Was promoted to Assistant AD in the fall of 2023.
Katie Gonzales – Illinois Wesleyan, Assistant AD for Athletic Communications // Chair of the CSC Academic All-America Committee
- Started as a student worker at Loras College in 2012 and has been working in the field since.
- Spent four years at Eastern Michigan University from 2015-2019, serving the first two years as a graduate assistant before being promoted to a full-time role.
- Wrapping up fifth year at Illinois Wesleyan University as the Assistant AD for Athletic Communications as primary contact for football, men's and women's basketball, softball, and men's and women's golf while overseeing athletic communications aspects for all 26 of our athletic programs.
- Oversees a staff of two graduate assistants, two full-time assistants, and roughly 20 student workers.
Kendra Willard – Auburn, Associate Director of Athletics Communications // Active CSC Scholarship Committee Member
- Started as a student assistant as a freshman at Concordia College (MN) in 2002 and has been working in the field ever since.
- Interned at UNC Greensboro (2006-07) and was a graduate assistant at Ohio State from 2007-09.
- First full-time job was at Auburn as an assistant director from 2009-11 before returning to Ohio State as an assistant director.
- Returned to Auburn in August 2015 and has served as the primary contact for gymnastics and equestrian ever since. Also serves as a secondary contact for football.
- Oversees Auburn's student staff.
About the Moderator
Sean Stevenson – Georgia, Associate Sports Communications Director // Active CSC Career Services Committee Member
- Started in the profession as a student worker his junior year at SEMO before staying on as a communications assistant and being promoted to a full-time role in 2015.
- Joined the Georgia Sports Communications staff in October 2017 as an assistant director before being promoted to associate director in 2022.
- Serves as the liaison between the communications office and UGA creative services.
