Who qualifies as an Academic All-America Hall of Fame (AAAHOF) candidate?

To be eligible for the AAAHOF, an Academic All-America® must:

  • Be nominated by his/her alma mater's athletic communications director. In order to nominate, an athletic communicator must be a dues-paying member for the current academic year.
  • The nominee must have earned Academic All-America® Team honors during his/her collegiate career or must meet the criteria for an Honorary Inductee.
  • Graduated with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  • Received college diploma at least 10 years ago.
  • Proven career success and philanthropic service.

What is the definition of an AAAHOF Honorary nominee?

An Honorary Inductee designation may be awarded to a former scholar-athlete whose collegiate career pre-dated the Academic All-America® program in his/her particular sport. The eligible candidates' academic and athletic achievements must meet minimum criteria (above) for selection to the Hall of Fame.

To assist you, here the start dates of the various Academic All-America programs: Football (1952), Men's Basketball (1963), Baseball (1970), Women's Basketball (1979), Women's Volleyball (1982), Men's At-Large and Women's At-Large (1983), Basetball (1983) and Softball (1983).

The At-Large category originally had the following sports which are now their own AAA categories: Men's Soccer; Women's Soccer; Men's Swimming & Diving; Women's Swimming & Diving; Men's Tennis and Women's Tennis. However, if your nominee competed in one of these sports or in any of our current At-Large sports PRIOR to the establishment of the At-Large category in 1983, then they would be considered an Honorary nominee.

Tips to prepare a thorough nomination:

  • To enhance your candidate's nomination, please be as thorough as possible when filling out your candidate's collegiate academic achievements; 2. collegiate athletic achievements; 3. professional achievements; and 4. community service/civic involvement/philanthropic activities.
  • Check your institution's athletic archives for information on a particular candidate. Please make contact with your athletic alumni office or campus alumni office to gather information on their current contact information and career and civic involvements and achievements.
