TOWSON, Md. – Seniors Nick Trull of Anderson (S.C.) University and Michelle McDonald of Winona State headline the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Basketball Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A kinesiology major with a 3.90 grade point average (G.P.A.), Trull has been selected as the Academic All-America of the Year for Division II men’s basketball. McDonald, an elementary education major with a 3.96 G.P.A., is the Academic All-America of the Year for Division II women’s basketball.

The Capital One Division II Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-2012 D-II Academic All-America teams program.

The recipient of the NCAA Division II Elite 88 Award at last year’s national championship, Trull has led No. 21 Anderson to a 20-4 record. As a junior, he was a key performer for the Trojans, who finished the season with a 21-12 record and reached the Division II Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass.

The second-leading scorer in school history with 1,434 points, Trull is the Trojans’ second-leading scorer with a 15.0 average. He is also averaging 4.1 rebounds per game and has an .815 free throw percentage.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Trull is a first-year starter in the Trojans’ backcourt. He is also shooting 38.9 percent from three-point range making 53 of 161 three-pointers. He adds 42 assists and 28 steals.

Last year, he was the winner of the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for men’s basketball.

A 6-0 forward, McDonald is the leading scorer and rebounder at Winona State. While averaging 16.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, the Johnsburg, Ill. native has led the Warriors to a 17-9 record. The fourth-leading scorer in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, she is also the fourth-leading rebounder in the conference. A two-time selection as the NSIC Player of the Week, McDonald is second in the NSIC with a .555 field goal percentage.

As a junior, McDonald earned first team All-NSIC honors while leading the Warriors to their first-ever NSIC Tournament championship. The Warriors’ top scorer with a 15.8 average, she also led the team with 7.0 rebounds per game. Honored as the NSIC Tournament Most Valuable Player, she averaged 21.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in the 2011 NSIC tournament. The Warriors, who finished the season with a 21-9 record, advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

A two-time member of the NSIC All-Academic team, McDonald ranks fourth on the Warriors’ career scoring list with 1,324 points. She is also the fourth-leading rebounder (690) in school history.

Capital One Academic All-America® Men's Basketball Division II Team

Stull is one of four seniors on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball team.

He is joined on the first team by Rory Blanche of Western Washington University, Ryan Dougherty of Southwest Baptist University, Desmond King of Texas A&M-Commerce, and Kramer Soderberg of Lindenwood University.

The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.74.

A manufacturing engineering technology major with a 3.74 G.P.A., Blanche has led No. 10 Western Washington to a 23-3 record. He is averaging a team-leading 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. The fifth-leading scorer in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, he is third in the GNAC with a .599 field goal percentage. The 15th-leading scorer in school history with 1,137 points, Blanche was an honorable mention all-conference selection last season when he averaged 14.3 points per game.

Dougherty, a 5-11 guard, is a biology (pre-physical therapy) major with a 3.62 G.P.A. at Southwest Baptist. The leading scorer for the Bearcats, he is averaging 16.3 points per game while making 69 of 181 three-point field goal attempts. He also has 105 assists and 34 steals, second on the team. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Dougherty is the fourth-leading scorer in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He also ranks fifth in the MIAA in assists.

A kinesiology major with a 3.73 G.P.A., King was the Lone Star Conference North Division Newcomer of the Year in 2011. A former transfer from Paris Junior College, he was named as an All-LSC first team selection after averaging 16.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. A 6-7 forward, King is the leading scorer for Texas A&M University-Commerce, averaging 15.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. A native if Alexandria, La., he is the fourth-leading scorer in the conference.

A 5-11 guard, Soderberg has led Lindenwood to a 26-3 record while averaging 17.2 points per game. A mass communication major with a 3.69 G.P.A., the St. Charles, Mo. native was a third team NAIA All-American as a junior after transferring from Miami (Ohio) University. Named as a first team All-Heartland of America Athletic Conference selection, he led the Lions to a 29-6 record last season. Soderburg, who has topped the 1,000-point mark in just two seasons, is also averaging 3.5 assists per game. He has only 44 turnovers and 41 steals.

Seniors Braydon Hobbs of Bellarmine and Chris Johansen of Regis join junior Jonathan Morse of Metropolitan State and sophomores Mike Dentlinger (Nebraska-Kearney) and David Downs (Seattle-Pacific) on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball second team.

Graduate student Steve Swiech of California (Pa.) headlines the Academic All-America® third team, along with seniors John Corrigan (Shippensburg), Robert Huntingdon (Nova Southeastern) and Matt Morris (Fort Lewis). Junior Andrew Davis of Texas A&M-Commerce completes the third team.


Capital One Academic All-America® Women's Basketball Division II Team

Joining McDonald on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team are seniors Megan Eul of Minnesota, Crookston, Vanessa Jones of Nebraska-Kearney and Kaitlin Petri of Chadron State and junior Brittany Cox of Pfeiffer University.

The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.95.

An early childhood education major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Eul is the second-leading scorer and rebounder at Minnesota, Crookston. A 5-10 senior forward from Rosemount, Minn., she is averaging 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per games. A two-time member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic team, she averaged 9.9 points per game as a junior.

Honored as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Player of the Year last season, Jones is a business administration major with a 3.96 G.P.A. A first team All-RMAC selection at Nebraska-Kearney, she averaged 16.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season. A native of Colorado Springs, Col., she became the 23rd player in school history to score 1,000 points. She leads the Lopers with a 6.9 rebounding average while scoring 13.7 points per game.

A business administration major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Petri is averaging 16.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game at Chadron State. Honored as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Player of the Year this season, she was named as a Daktronics All-America third team selection as a junior. She earned Academic All-America honors after averaging 19.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. After missing the 2010-11 season with an injury, she has returned to average 16.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

The only junior on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team, Cox is a sports management major with a 3.92 G.P.A. The leading scorer in the Conference Carolinas, she is averaging 21.3 points per game and was named as the conference Player of the Week two days ago. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C. native recently scored her 1,000th career point at Pfeiffer. The seventh-leading scorer in NCAA Division II, she also ranks among the national leaders with 77 three-point baskets. A second team all-conference selection as a sophomore, she is also averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.

The Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball second team features seniors Mikayla Barondeau of Northern State and Kelly Costello of Chaminade, along with juniors Sam Hoyt (Michigan Tech), Traci Keyser (Fort Hays State), and Kaitlin Snyder (Fairmont State). Sophomore Lauren Battista of Bentley rounds out the six-player second team.

The Capital One Academic All-America® third team consists of graduate student Nicole Bozek of Alaska Fairbanks and seniors Lydia Bridenbaugh (West Virginia Wesleyan), Nikki Frederickson (Mercyhurst) and Hanna Johansson (Alaska Anchorage).
