Working with soccer stats & stat rules

Learning about the sport of soccer, understanding unusual plays and scoring situations, and producing accurate statistics.

Original date: Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023

Generating consistent statistics and consistent stat reporting are essential duties of each athletic communications department. From our 2023-24 CSC Statistics and Stat Rules Webinar Series, this webinar featured leading college soccer statisticians discussing pre-game best practices setups, in-game scoring, and giving an understanding of the rules of the game as they pertain to producing accurate statistics.

The discussion and insights focused on:

  • college soccer rules and how to score them correctly
  • best practices for pregame preparation for statistics, setting up stat personnel and job duties of that personnel, and how to effectively work with your opponent SID; setting up rosters, uniform number issues, etc; in-game statistical how-to's; post-game reporting; working with your opponents’ athletic communications sport contact(s)
  • the needs of the NCAA as it pertains to soccer roster and schedule accuracy, statistical reporting, and changes which might need to be made
  • the use of proper in-game scoring techniques to register accurate statistics, including: entering starters; what sources to use if unsure about a play; recording basic statistics
  • a review of the "own goals" definition, what is a shot versus a shot on goal versus a cross/pass attempt, how to define an assist
  • discussion of difficult/unusual plays, ways to troubleshoot them and the way to accurate stat them during the game
  • best practices and communications in editing game files and working with your fellow SIDs post-match

Panelists
  • Matt Holmes – NCAA Assistant Director of Media Coordination and Statistics
  • Chris Shoals –  University of Kentucky Associate Director, Athletic Communications and Public Relations
